Introduction to this Musical Link Investigation
This blog is aiming to explore similarities and differences between two distinctive musical cultures: Musical Theatre and Bossa Nova. The Rum Tum Tugger from CATS The Musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber will be examined with Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66's Bim Bom. These two musical pieces show distinctive characteristics of each culture represented, allowing a deeper understanding on both musical theatre and bossa nova. I have decided to look deeper into the wide use of repetition/imitation and sequencing of the melody for both pieces, as well as their use of melody lines.
Musical theatre is typically known for its dramatic performances with songs influenced mainly from Jazz, Pop and Rock. In this case, The Rum Tum Tugger is strongly influenced by Rock music with its strong rock beats. On the other hand, bossa nova is known as popularized Brazilian music, which is primarily influenced by Jazz and Samba. Wide use of repetition/ imitation and sequencing is used in both musical pieces, Both musical theatre and bossa nova focus on vocal lines with emphasis on the techniques. As vocal lines play a significant role in both musical cultures, this blog will thoroughly investigate how they are used in both musical pieces, thus understanding the influence of vocals in each culture chosen.
The amount of enthusiasm towards musical theatre and bossa nova encouraged me to choose these two distinctive cultures. These deep connections in the investigation will give a new, fresh insight when approaching both musical cultures.
